I took these beauties off the loom today. Ready for their finishing touches: fringe twisting, a bit of sewing, some embroidery, and then wet finishing.

Today I’m sharing another video about the hemstitch.
I used a simple hemstitch to create this open V effect, where the shine of the tencel warp really comes to life.
The open structure lets the light play with the threads, making them shimmer beautifully.
As I’m nearing the end of this warp, I’m already dreaming up new colourways for the next one.

Meet Niamh 🦙
I visited @luboschlandalpaca yesterday and met Niamh, a sweet, beautiful and curious alpaca with a taste for carrots, and the most gorgeous fleece imaginable.
So now I’m the proud owner of nearly two kilograms of soft, camel-coloured alpaca fleece. It was inevitable, really.
My #moswolt spinning wheel is currently busy with another project, but I couldn’t resist trying these luscious fibres right away. So out came my #dropspindle. I find I have much more control of the fibres when using a dropspindle, and that's always helpful when trying something new.
The fibres are cloud-soft, light as air, and surprisingly easy to spin “from the cloud.” I wonder what this will become!

I thought I’d share how I start a new pirn.
Maybe this helps someone who’s been wondering, because I definitely did when I first started weaving.
This method is really quick, and if you’re using fine yarns, no one will ever notice the join. Especially after wet finishing.
There are lots of ways to weave in the ends, but in many cases this one works beautifully.
Just make sure to overlap enough, depending on the yarn’s friction and the purpose of your final piece.

I’m working on a little side project.
It’s part of my master plan to indoctrinate everyone around me with weaving, spinning, and yarn.
Not really, of course, but this time I’m dressing the loom for someone else. They want to find out if weaving is for them. (I already know the answer.)
This is my very first loom: an old @toikaoy Leena!
If you look at the emblem, you’ll see it says Toijala, that’s where they’re based, and where the loom gets its name. I had the privilege of visiting when I was in Tampere, just a short train ride away.
(Public transport in Finland is such a relaxing experience!)
The axle once broke, but we replaced it with a new one, so it’s good to go for another 50 years at least.
And just look at these colours! The 8/2 cotton from @vennecolcoton is absolutely gorgeous! Rich, vibrant, and so satisfying to work with. It makes dressing the loom a joy all by itself.

Do you like ladder stitches?
I have mixed feelings about them. I love how decorative and interesting they can be, but I also adore the simplicity of a clean, unembellished shawl.
They’re a lot of work and always make me second-guess my design choices... and sometimes I’m right to, because occasionally I really don’t like the final result.
Still, I can’t help but enjoy making them.
The shiny thread is from @vennecolcoton . They had a stock sale this spring, and being the magpie that I am, I just had to grab the shiny things.

So many lovely things to do, so little time...
Adding yet another yarn and fibre-related obsession was probably not the smartest move, but once you go fibre spinning, there’s no way back.
The same goes for weaving.
And dyeing.
And tablet weaving.
And sewing.
And patchwork...
Still, I’m happy to be back at my loom to finish this warp, because I already have so many new colourways in mind for the next ones.
Here I’m weaving a small section of the main pattern, which might just be my favourite part. The rhythm, the flow and I’ll be honest, I love the speed too.
I enjoy every step really, even warping and dressing the loom because that really builds up anticipation!

I’m so happy to still be in touch with the previous owners of my spinning wheel. Not only because I love knowing its history, but also because they’re true experts with tons of experience and willing to share their wisdom.
Spinning on a wheel feels completely different from spinning with a drop spindle, especially when you’re still learning both.
Ever since I started taking things slowly, my wheel and I have been enjoying the process so much more. I think the wheel is especially relieved, after the way I treated it 🫣🚲
I can’t wait to share some delicious yarn soon. This time I might have actually spun it just right! The luscious merino fibres from @schapenvachtenlifestyle are already yummy on their own.

This beauty is a new addition to my addiction. It is a very special Moswolt spinning wheel. Apparently it is something connoisseurs will know and love, so I feel all the more privileged.
I couldn't help myself and had to try it out immediately, and it spins like a dream!

I started working on a new scarf today. I always get a bit anxious and excited at the same time.
Especially when working with a yarn I have not yet worked with.
This is baby alpaca, linen and silk on a warp of dandelion/tencel.
So far so good!

I had the privilege to visit the weaving studio at @chateau.cortils today. Marjo from @m.vormstof invited me come along to see this amazing workspace, and to pick each other's brains about various projects and future dreams.
Marjo is a ceramics artist and she recently started working with fibers again.
We met at spinning course and felt a connection through fiber, spindle spinning and weaving. She uses all natural colours and materials which she finds at @enci.maastricht and it is very inspirational to see her creative mind at work. Go check out her page!
At the chateau, I fell in love with the studio, the extensive book collection, all the materials and looms... but this ancient loom was just amazing, with an actual reed, made of reed!

They would be used as a decorative trim or border on garments or headwear.
I thoroughly enjoyed making these.

It feels so wrong to post nice things, and therefore I hardly post anything these days.
My screen is filled with horrible images from Gaza and I find it difficult to let that go and focus on pictures of my weaving.
I do make stuff obviously. And maybe this little blanket brings a smile to your face when you need a bit of positivity amidst the horrendous news we see daily.
How do you all cope? Do you struggle too?
After watching some video's of @sallypointer, and due to a lack of stingy nettles, I tried my luck with some grape vine and turned it into my very first "cordage".
I say "cordage" because it is a very poor attempt of course.
But I was chuffed that I could use it to tie my rose.
Now I'm on a mission to find me some nice and tall nettles, because a proverbial seed has been planted!

While rummaging in my cupboard to find a place to put my emptied @lojanwheelsandlooms spindle, I found this bamboo fiber. I forgot I ordered it together with the small batts of merino and stellina from @schapenvachtenlifestyle, because that's over 6 months ago.
So here I was, empty spindle in hand, a million things to do and a gorgeous shiny fibre calling my name.
There was nothing I could do from keeping myself from trying this new fibre with the "on the fold" technique.
It's amazing how strong this fibre is, and how it grips itself.
But back in the cupboard it goes for now.

I managed to capture some sparkles of the stellina in the merino yarn.
This is the very last piece of this yummy colourful warp. I loved every bit of weaving on it, maybe even the decorative stitches... 😉
I haven't been able to cut it off because it was time to get the kids. Maybe, hopefully tomorrow. Because I can't wait to see all of it.

Practicing on a finnish band I want to weave with my handspun yarn in the near future.
This is a leftover warp from another project which I could easily adapt to the right amount of pattern tablets.
Don't mind the border.
It's a tablet woven band with a different technique as discovered by @swanmervi and Maikki Karisto who wrote some amazing books on their studies of archeological finds.
This band is from their second book 'Tablet woven treasures', and it uses the tie down technique, where long floats are woven over, just like brocade tablet weaving.
In the close-up you can see the linnen weft going over the pearl cotton warp.
I'm in awe of the talent and knowledge of both Mervi and Maikki, and their ancestors.
It's a privilege to be able to connect to iron age Suomelaista ihmistä while working with yarn, doing what I love.

Plied, washed and hanging out to dry.
This is corriedale wool and it is so nice and smooth!
I provably messed it up a bit when plying, but it's a process with a steep learning curve.
I'm still happy with it and I think I will send this yarn with two other handspuns to France, to our knitting aunt.

I started another fine spin, because I had an empty spindle.
And I still had three small batts calling my name.
I'm very happy with how it's going. It's getting much mite even and thin. And it seems I'm getting better at balancing the spin to get a balanced yarn.
With every attempt and with every small piece of information I learn, my admiration for our fore elders increases.
Their knowledge of materials and techniques, ánd skillsets to work fibres into good quality yarn must have been immense.

A package from @spinspul arrived today, with this super adorable spindle from @lojan and some corriedale wool. I just wanted to feel the wool, but I just can't let go anymore!
This yummy wool spins itself!
Keep in mind I'm an absolute beginner spinner (love how that rhymes 😄), but this yarn just seems to magically apear by itself!
I was afraid 200 grams of roving might be a bit too ambitious, but how this is going, I'm gonna need some more SOON!
Luckily I also ordered some bluefaced leicester to play with and compare.
The plan is to dye any decent yarn that I can make in the old Roman way.

Look what I got for Valentine's! I don't care about flowers or candy or fancy dinners. Yarn is where my heart is, and my family of course.
I had some help putting the loom together, but it was easy peasy so my daughter and I managed just fine! The package even comes with a sturdy screwdriver, some sand paper for the occasional lesser smooth edge, a velcro strip for the shuttle and a gorgeous tulip pattern!

Because these are just simple flat knots, they hold enough to pull the yarn through. But you can easily pull them off the other end, without leaving any knots.

After tying all ends together, there is the reward of pulling all the threads through the heddles and reed. I soooooo love doing this!

Speeding things up 😄
Last time I did this pattern in fine 34/2 silk, so in 8/2 cotton it seems very coarse to me. But I still love how it looks, especially in these vibrant colors!
